Tauranga Domain, Speedway Baypark — big changes proposed.
Tauranga City Council (TCC) has resolved, without any comprehensive public consultation, to remove the world class athletics track, relocate the bowling and croquet clubs to yet to be determined and agreed locations, rearrange the tennis club in order to build a stadium for 8 -12000 people across a large part of the domain.
TCC does not want community sports played in the Tauranga Domain.
At the same time TCC has told the Speedway at Baypark they must leave and find a new place. Speedway is one of the most popular regular events in Tauranga, over 9000 spectators at the last meeting.
TCC have changed their minds over the Speedway and they are to remain in the near future October 2023
What is going on!! Who is making these decisions? And the cost!! Latest cost estimates are $450 million and growing.
Who pays, you, the ratepayer, another $250 ++ added to your rates bill annually.

Community consultation about the stadium for the draft 2024-34 Long Term Plan LTP will run from 15 November until 15 December, 2023, so we encourage you and everyone in the community to share your views on what’s being proposed then. Be there and have your objection recorded.

Active Reserves Masterplan or Fantasy Plan.
On 3 Oct 2022 Tauranga City Council and the Commissioners decided without any true and meaningful public consultation, any real business plan and without any available funding, to rearrange the use of the parks in Tauranga. They plan the following
Build a 8000 -12000 stadium in Tauranga Domain with no extra car parking
Move the World Athletics approved international class athletics track from the Domain to Baypark where it does not fit. NOTE: It is not proposed to put the athletics track in the Speedway area.
Move the Tauranga Croquet Club and the Bowling Club to somewhere else — not resolved at present.
Rearrange the tennis courts at Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club and take away the club car parking
Move netball from Blake Park to Baypark
Have told Speedway at Baypark to move on and find somewhere else to locate. Demolish the perfectly good grandstand at Baypark!!! Speedway to remain for the near future Oct 2023
Demolish the Mt Maunganui Sports Hall to make way for parking.
no community sports in Tauranga Domain
Most of these clubs have ongoing leases to 2029, yet the council wants to start work next year.
Total cost in excess of $500 million and no extra facilities being created. What a waste of effort and money, ratepayer’s money.
Over the years all the clubs have created these wonderful facilities, and invested $ millions into their facilities along with untold hours of voluntary work. Now the commissioners want to throw all of this away without any true understanding of the value of these amenities to the community.

These plans affect three Council reserves, Tauranga Domain, Baypark and Blake Park and include the above. The changes are being hurried through with no consultation with the community who will pay for and use the facilities.

Are you concerned with the loss of public reserve space at Marine Park on Sulphur Point. This is another change of usage the Commissioners are “illegally” ramming through (after the community previously said NO). And interestingly, the University of Waikato is the primary benefactor with the “Research Centre”, the same university which is also grabbing a large part of the proposed Stadium . There is an awareness public picnic meeting onsite on Sunday 22nd January from 2pm. Come along and show your support to keep the Reserve a green space.
