Proposed Stadium Multi Use Arena Tauranga Domain & Removal of Baypark Speedway
Points to note Nov 2022
Capacity of stadium 8000 - 18000 people.
No car parking added to the area.
Business Case not been developed.
Only round ball sports will use the stadium. Chief rugby games have been successfully played at Baypark Stadium in the past. Easy parking at Baypark Stadium.
The green space, ambience and community sports played in the domain will be essential with the future growth of Tauranga, not a white elephant stadium used two or three times a year. TCC plans for a community of 40,000 people in the Te Papa area.
Concept is being pushed by those with no skin in the game.
Projected Costs
Cost for stadium is projected to be $165 million ++
Relocate Croquet Club $30 million
Relocate and rebuild World Athletics approved athletics track .$25 million
Relocate Speedway $250 million
Changes to Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club $2-3 million.
Relocate Bowling Club $10 million
Total Cost in excess of $450 million to date ( at today’s prices). This money could build all the cycleways needed in Tauranga, increase the sizes of key traffic bridges, upgrade the roading system. and more .
Ratepayers will pay for this in two ways, levies for the capital cost and additional charges to the rates for ongoing operational costs. Stadiums do not make a profit. Add another $250++ to your rates annually.
Timetable
TCC wants to start work on the 2023/2024 year without any meaningful plan or funding in place and it appears not honouring the current leases to 2029 which are in place.
